Making room for more life – restoration of former beech forest into functioning and connected habitat
LIFE’s a Beech is a project within the EU’s LIFE programme. We work with ecological restoration of temperate broadleaved forests in the Natura 2000 network in southern Sweden and central Belgium. Although these areas are different, they face the same challenges: increasing the variety of tree species and age of trees, as well as increase the amount of dead wood. Many of the areas that are now protected as Natura 2000 areas were used for commercial forestry in the past. Because of this, the areas are dominated by beech and even-aged forest stands.
The goal of the project is to create a connected green infrastructure made of species-rich broadleaf forests. Forests with old and large trees, plenty of dead wood, and flowering open areas. This will benefit insects, mosses, lichens, and bats.
We also want to spread knowledge about biodiversity in broadleaf forests and show cost-effective ways to protect nature.

Radio Kristianstad P4 was visiting in Klåveröd where Stiftelsen Skånska Landskap has cut down spruce trees and will replace them with broadleaved trees.
