Species

The project improves habitats for threatened species in broadleaved forests. Many red-listed fungi, lichens, and insects depend on old beech-dominated forests.

Examples include:

  • Lion mane’s mushroom, Hericium erinaceus
  • Clustered bracket Inonotus cuticularis
  • Rosy dot lichen Bacidia rosella
  • Beech bark spot lichen Pyrenula nitida
  • Large black longhorn beetleStictoleptura scutellata

Annex II species (species with special protection under EU law) also benefit from the project, such as:

  • Bechstein’s bat, Myotis bechsteinii
  • Barbastelle bat, Barbastella barbastellus
  • Hermit beetle, Osmoderma eremita
  • Stag beetle, Lucanus cervus

Even though hermit beetles and stag beetles only live in a few project areas, the work is still important.
Sweden has 30–50% of all known hermit beetle populations in Europe, and both species depend on old, large broadleaf trees—the type of environment this project aims to protect and restore.
